Pokhalde Peak

higlights

  • Since the terrain can be hard and the days long
  • Hikers on these treks should be in good physical condition and have some previous mountain walking experience.
  • But It does not require any technical experience.
  • Steep climbing may be involved, although it is never necessary to use ropes.

OVERVIEW

This mountain poses few difficulties and it is often used as a warm up for other Himalayan Peaks. It is one of the so called ‘trekking peaks’ of Nepal and it does not require a huge amount of mountaineering skill. The term trekking peak is, however, a little misleading for some of these peaks which should be approached seriously. Most people climb the north ridge from the Kongma La. It is also possible to climb the South ridge (see route section.)

The mountain lies to the east of the Khumbu Valley which leads all the way up to Everest base camp. Pokalde is around two or three miles from Everest but the Lhotse ridge obscures the view of the highest point on Earth from the summit.

From the hamlet of Lobuche, which consists of only a handful of trekking lodges, the peak does look impressive as a high point on the ridge across the valley. It sits above the Kongma La (pass) and in comparison to the busy paths leading to Everest the route is infrequently travelled. The mountain is, of course, dwarfed by its impressive neighbours but nevertheless it is a worthwhile side trip from a trek.

Dear Babu, “Our trekking trip was very well planned and executed by Unique Path Trekking, from when Babu met up with us at the hotel upon arriving in Kathmandu, right through to the day of our departure at the end of the trek. Babu and his team took care of all the arrangements and administration throughout the entire trip, leaving us to focus on enjoying the trek. The sights along the trek were breathtaking, and really have to be seen in first person to appreciate the majestic and gigantic scenery. Well done to Babu and his team for a great trekking experience.” All the best with your company and future endeavours Babu, and please pass on Bob’s and my regards and best wishes to Raam and his studies Regards,

We really enjoyed our trek from Lukla to Gokyo-ri, returning to Namche via Tengboche – brilliant views of Everest in many places. Jeevan our guide was excellent, I hope that he is still enjoying using my old mp3 player, as was Shambu the porter – always smiling, never once complaining, even though he was carrying two sets of luggage. We were met promptly on arrival at both Kathmandu and Lukla and supported until we returned back to Kathmandu airport for the flight home. There was sufficient flexibility in the trek arrangements to allow my wife and I to see our daughter at Machermo, spend some time with her over the next four days and visit Photse and Tengboche as a detour on the return leg. Many thanks,

Madeleine and Jim Newcomb

Many thanks to uniquepath and the supporting team at Uniquepath trekking. From those who “summitted” Everest Base Camp, trekked the Ghorepani/Ghandruk rhododendrum forests, explored Kathmandu & Pokhara and played with the elephants at Chitwan, we all say dhanyabad !! The mountains were shy and stayed hidden in the mist but the spring flowers bloomed in the hills. Best wishes to you all and to the people of Nepal – “May all the hopes and dreams you have for the future of your country, come true and blossom like the mountain flowers.” We will return.

Trekked in Langtang area for 10 days, an excellent trip, Kundan was an excellent guide, tailoring the trip to our wishes and abilities always happy and good fun, we very much decided what we wanted to do and Kundan made it possible was excellent when I had knee pains and great fun in teahouses. Our porters Tilik and Harry where also excellent and very attentive and always on hand for us. I have trekked twice previously in Himalayas in large groups, without question I would use yourselves again over any large group, and wish I had found you in the past. Many thanks to all for a wonderful trip and superb organisation. All the booking and transport was equally efficient, even when our car broke down an alternative was swiftly found. Cant wait to return again one day. Regards,

Mark
