Kathmandu Durbar SquareKathmandu Durbar Square

This complex of palaces, courtyards, and temples were built in the 12th to 18th centuries used to be the seat of the ancient Malla kings of Kathmandu. An intriguing piece here is the 17th century stone inscription set in to the wall of the palace with writing in 15 languages. Durbar Square is the social, religious and urban focal point of the city. There are three museums inside the palace building.

Durbar Square is situated in the heart of the city, the main tourist attraction. The Square is full of ancient palaces, temples and shrines noted for their exquisite carvings. One can rummage for treasures and souvenirs in the various shops around the Square.

Pashupatinath

PashupatinathPashupatinath is the holiest Hindu pilgrimage destination in Nepal. There are linga images of Shiva a long with the statues, shrine and temples dedicated to other deities in the complex. A temple dedicated to Shiva existed at this site in 879AD.However the present temple built by King Bhupatindra malla in 1697AD.A gold plated roof, silver doors and woodcarvings of the finest quality decorate the Pagoda construction. There are rows of Shiva shrines and Hindu pilgrims from all over south Asia offering( Puja) worship to Shiva tile of lord of destruction. The Bagmati rivers follows close by and the Arya Ghat cremation grounds are there.

SwayambhunathSwayambhunath Stupa

An impressive Buddhist Stupa, the oldest shrine of Kathmandu valley often called Monkey Temple, visitors not only get a good view of the valley but come face to face with temples resident monkeys. Painted on four sides of the spire are the all-seeing eyes of Lord Buddha.

Boudhanath Stupa lies 6Km to the east of downtown Kathmandu and is the largest Stupa of Asia. It looms 36 meters high and presents one of the most fascinating specimens of Stupa design. A huge statue of Lord Buddha is kept. Boudhanath a World Heritage Site is also known as Khasti. There are more than 45 Buddhist monasteries in the area.

This is the most ancient temple of Kathmandu valley. The temple built third century is decorated by some of the best samples of stones, wood and metal crafts in the valley. A fifth century stone inscription, the oldest to be discovered in Nepal, is located in the temple compound and it tells of the victorious King Mandev

Historical Musuem

Historical MusuemThe only of its kind in Nepal is situated 3 Km west of Kathmandu city, behind the famous Syawambhunath hillock. Program under the institute of science, this Museum has over 14000 of unique collection of butterflies, fish, reptiles, birds, mammals, plants, and fossils, recorded with the country. Near by there is another national Museum, one can have a general idea of the historical and archaeological objects on show since it houses a remarkable and wide range of weapons of war antiques

Kirtipur

KirtipurThe Kirtipur situated on the top of hillock 6 km southwest of Kathmandu. The ancient township is a natural fortress and has a proud and courageous history. It was founded by Shiva Deva between 1099 and 1126. It was apart of kingdom of Patan after the division of Kathmandu valley in 1482. Historically, this city is famous for its resistance against the invasion of Gorkhas. The King of Gorkha, Prithivi Narayan Shah attacked there time to conquer this city. The city is historically and artistically important. There are many small and big temples and stupas scattered around the city. The Chilamchu Stupa and the temple of Bagh Bhairav are major sights here. Kirtipur offers quaint streets lined with artistic houses and temple squares. The people are known for their skill in building and weaving.

Dashinkali & Chovar

DakshinkaliThe temple of Dakshinkali is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali and is one of the most popular places of worship in Kathmandu. Located 22 km from the city center on the southern rim of the valley past Pharping village, the shrine is especially crowded on Tuesdays and Saturdays when animal sacrifices are offered to the deity. According to a mythology the Goddess Durga has killed the demon and drank the blood of animals. This is the reason blood is scarified to her. The temple was built by Pratap Malla during 17th century, but the construction, seems to be very new. The preparation before and after the offering is very interesting to see.

On the way back, we stop at Chobhar gorge. Legend has it that Manjushree cutout the gorge to drain out Kathmandu valley was then a lake. There is a small but picturesque temple of Adinath on the top of a hill. From this top one can have a completed view of snowcapped mountains peaks.

Sankhu & Bajra Yogini

Sankhu & Bajra YoginiSanku is a very old Newar city and lies 23 km from Kathmandu. It derives its name from Sankhapura, which means Conch City. It lies on the famous route to Tibet. The traders used this route from 7th to 9th centuries AD. This legendary city is worth a visit, because of its old houses, beautiful wood- carved temples and old stone water taps. The famous temple of Goddess Ugratara Bajrayogini is situated at a 45 minute walking distance from here.

Buddhist parallel manifestation of Goddess Kali. The temple complex is supposed to be as old as Changunarayan (467 AD). It is mentioned in Gopal Vamsabali, a research manuscript, which states Manadev, performed penance at this place. The present three- tier structure or the temple is the contribution of King Pratap Malla.

This carpet factory is managed by the Tibetan Refugee and is a place where one can see the entire process of spinning, dying and weaving Tibetan design wool carpets. The center also has a well-shocked show room for carpet purchasing.
